Consultation questions

Good questions for a med spa consultation

From licensing under California rules to aftercare, here is what to ask a local provider.

What to ask at your consultation

A provider who is comfortable with these questions is a good sign.

  • Is the person treating me licensed in California, and for what?
  • How much experience do they have with this treatment?
  • What is the name of the device or product, and is it the one I will get every time?
  • What does a full series look like from start to finish?
  • What should I do at home in the days after treatment?
  • If I have a reaction, who do I call, and when?
  • Can you give me the total cost in writing?

Your consultation notes

It helps to treat a consultation like any appointment where you need to make a decision. Bring notes in, and leave with notes.

Going in, have your health history, medications, allergies and past treatments written down, plus your questions. Coming out, write down who you met, what they suggested, the device or product named, the aftercare, and the total cost they quoted. Notes make it much easier to compare providers or sleep on it.

How to look up a license

Each state has boards that license nurses, physicians, physician assistants and, in many states, other aesthetic professionals. In California, you can usually search these boards online by name.

Ask the provider who will perform your treatment and what license they hold, then look it up. Also slow down if you feel pressure to book that day, if there is no consultation, if answers about who does the work are vague, or if the cost will not be written down.

Ask your questions first. A local provider can contact you by phone, text or email.
